Welcome!

I am a software engineer, designer, and researcher who uses a human-centered approach to help people understand data by building interactive data analysis, visualization, and machine learning tools. I am currently working at Apple in Seattle, building machine learning tools for software engineers and data scientists.

I completed my PhD in Human Centered Design and Engineering in 2015 at the University of Washington in Seattle, advised by Cecilia Aragon. Before grad school, I studied Math and Computer Science at Oberlin College, and grew up in Pittsboro, NC. My dissertation is about how social scientists analyze large amounts of social media data, and how to design software to support their work. I have designed and built tools for collaborative analysis of Twitter datasets, interactive machine learning, and emotion classification in chat messages. More about my research.
